Three Charged in 1980 Slaying of Hammond Officer
Three men are charged with murder in the 1980 slaying of an off-duty Hammond police officer after a bag used during the botched robbery attempt was linked to other incidents. Larry Mayes, 62, of Portage and James Hill, 49, of Gary were being held at the Lake County Jail in Crown Point. The third man charged, 62-year-old Pierre Catlett of Harvey, Ill., remained at large.
