Cop Killer Sentenced to Death

A jury unanimously decided on a death sentence for Bryan Hulsey, a man convicted of first-degree murder in the 2007 death of a Glendale, Ariz. police officer. Hulsey stood and applauded when the verdict was read, saying, "Good job," twice. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Kreamer also sentenced Hulsey to nine years in prison on one count of attempted first-degree murder to run consecutively with his death sentence. Atlanta Cop Arrested in Woman's Murder

An Atlanta police officer is accused of shooting a Hapeville, Ga. woman and burning her body. A Hapeville city employee found the burning body of Vernicia Woodard, 26. Police said Woodard was shot multiple times and set on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence. The Hapeville Police Department issued arrest warrants for Tahreem Zeus Rana, an officer with the City of Atlanta Police Department, on charges of murder, arson and kidnapping. Read more...

Murder Suspect's Girlfriend Charged

Police have arrested the girlfriend of a man who they say fatally shot a home health care nurse outside an apartment complex in North Carolina. Jessica Renee Parrisher, 28, was arrested for allegedly lying to authorities investigating the death of 58-year-old Wendy Johnson in Cary, N.C., according to an arrest warrant. Parrisher has been charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Read more...

Woman Sought in Wisconsin Murder

Investigators are seeking a person believed to be one of the last to see 43-year-old Fox Lake, Wis. resident Michael Soeller alive. The Dodge County Sheriff's Office says Soeller's landlord found him dead inside his apartment. The landlord says he had not seen Soeller for several days. The sheriff's office released a picture, taken from surveillance video at a Wal-Mart store, of a woman believed to be among the last to see Soeller alive. Read more...

Deputy Shoots Sword-Wielding Man

A sword-wielding suspect was shot and killed by a Manatee County, Fla. sheriff's deputy. Deputies were called out to a convenience store in Bradenton, Fla., where a woman said she was the victim in a domestic violence incident involving her 31-year-old son, Terry Sellars Jr. Investigators went to the victim's home to arrest Sellars, who allegedly came out of the residence waving a samurai sword. Women Arrested for Cooking Meth in Church

Southern Illinois authorities have charged two women with cooking methamphetamine in a rural Hillsboro church. 53-year-old Judith Hemken, of Litchfield, and 26-year-old Tiffany Burton, of Hillsboro, were charged with participating in manufacturing meth in a church. Due to enhanced sentencing guidelines that take into consideration meth lab location, they could each face nine to 40 years in prison if convicted. Read more...

Bomber Suspect's Sister Charged

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's sister was arrested on suspicion she threatened to bomb a woman who previously had a romantic relationship with her boyfriend. Ailina Tsarnaeva, who lives in North Bergen, New Jersey, made the threat against an upper Manhattan woman via telephone, police said. Dad Acquitted in Revenge Killing

A grieving dad has escaped a possible life sentence after a Texas jury acquitted him of charges that he shot the drunk driver who killed his young sons. David Barajas, 32, broke down in tears as the 'not guilty' verdict was read in an Angleton court. Boyfriend Charged in House Fire Deaths

A man suspected of killing his Columbus, Ga. girlfriend and her baby, whose bodies were found last week in the wreckage of a house fire, has turned himself in to police. Brandon Conner, 35, was arrested Tuesday night after police named him a suspect in the death of Rosella Mitchell and her 6-month-old son Dylan Conner. Fugitive Captured After Shootout

An armed fugitive wanted for nearly two decades on drug charges in the South was wounded during a shootout with deputy U.S. marshals who tracked him down in New York City, federal authorities said. It was the second time in less than a month that a hunt for a fugitive ended in gunfire in the city. On July 28, a California sex-assault suspect was killed in a shootout with authorities in Greenwich Village. Dad Charged in Beating Death

An Indianapolis man has been charged with murder after he admitted to repeatedly beating his 4-year-old son, leading to the boy's death. Dennis Price, 29, called police and said his child took pills, was unconscious and not breathing. The boy was taken to a local hospital where he died. The child suffered what appeared to be a number of blunt force traumatic injuries over his entire body. Read more...

Craigslist Couple Plead Guilty

A newlywed couple charged in the stabbing death of a stranger they lured through a Craigslist ad offering companionship pleaded guilty to murder on Tuesday and face mandatory sentences of life without parole. Miranda Barbour, 19, and Elytte Barbour, 22, had previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges that carried a possible death penalty upon conviction. DeWayne Williams, 28, and Jamie Bowyer, 31, allegedly fled the scene Monday night after a 23-year-old man was shot in the face. Man Charged With Multiple Killings

Prosecutors charged a suspect in three Los Angeles-area weekend killings with murder in an earlier shooting. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office said 34-year-old Alexander Hernandez was charged with capital murder for killing 48-year-old Gildardo Morales as he drove his pickup truck to work on Aug. 21. Former Marine Pleads Not Guilty

A former Marine has pleaded not guilty to killing the pregnant wife of another Marine. 24-year-old Christopher Lee entered the plea Tuesday to first-degree murder with a special allegation of lying in wait. Lee was arrested in Alaska on Aug. 17 after the body of 19-year-old Erin Corwin was found down a 100-foot mine shaft near Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert. The Tennessee native went missing June 28. A woman accused of trying to sneak aboard multiple flights and sentenced to jail for one incident in California has been arrested at a Phoenix airport. Police say 62-year-old Marilyn Jean Hartman was taken into custody near baggage claim at Sky Harbor International Airport on suspicion of criminal trespass. Police are requesting a mental health evaluation for Hartman, who was recently ordered to spend 117 days in jail for violating probation by returning to Los Angeles International Airport. A suspected kidnapper crashed his vehicle into four cars while fleeing from police after the woman he allegedly abducted texted her sister for help. Police said Daniel Romero, 39, kidnapped and beat the unidentified woman around 7 p.m. Monday in Albuquerque, N.M. Suspects Sought in Drug Shooting

Police are searching for two suspects involved in a shooting at a McDonald's in Virginia that left one man injured in a possible drug deal gone wrong. Authorities said the victim, 23, had made arrangements to meet with a female acquaintance, 31-year-old Jamie Bowyer, in the parking lot of the fast food restaurant Monday evening in Woodbridge. When he got there, police said Bowyer was with another man, 28-year-old DeWayne Williams, and the two men got into an altercation. Read more...

5 Dead, 42 Wounded in Chicago

Five people were killed and at least 42 were wounded - including a 3-year-old boy - by gun violence in Chicago over the weekend. Authorities said the 3-year-old was accidentally shot in the head Friday around 7:30 p.m. after he or a sibling discharged the gun at a home on the city's west side, according to the paper. Bike Trail Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

An Iowa man pleaded not guilty Monday in the case of a man found dead near a bike path over the weekend. Steven Jonas, 49, of Clive, was arrested late Sunday evening and charged with first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Zachary Michael Paulsen. According to the station, Paulsen's body was found Saturday morning lying against a fence by volunteers working to clear brush along the town's Greenbelt Trail. Read more...

Boy Shot in Bedroom by Teen

Police have apprehended a suspect after a 13-year-old boy was shot to death in his bedroom in west Georgia. Police say witnesses heard gunfire between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday. They said relatives later discovered Nizzear Rodriguez with a gunshot wound when they awoke and called 911. In the three days since a Millbrook woman was reported missing, police have charged her son with murder and located a body they believe to be hers. Sedric Clayton, 27, of Millbrook was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of his mother, Anita Washington, 49, also of Millbrook. Washington was reported missing Wednesday. Federal officials are searching for Kevin Joseph Lino, a felon wanted for his alleged involvement in the July assault and murder of a man at a Missoula, Montana homeless camp. Police are also on the lookout for Lino's girlfriend, Angela Marchese, who may be traveling with Lino and who is considered a witness in the case. A Utah woman accused of helping her husband dump their teenage baby sitter's body in the woods after a night of sex and drugs has been sentenced to up to five years in prison. A state judge sentenced 41-year-old Dea Millerberg in an emotional hearing. Calling the crime heinous and depraved, Judge W. Brent West said he would have leveled a harsher sentence if not for a plea deal prosecutors agreed to in exchange for Millerberg's testimony against her husband. Read more...

Purdue Shooter Pleads Guilty

A court official says the man accused in the fatal shooting and stabbing of a fellow Purdue University student has pleaded guilty to murder. Cody Cousins, 24, of Warsaw, Ind., entered the plea during a Tippecanoe County court hearing in Lafayette. He has been jailed without bond since his arrest soon after the Jan. 21 attack that killed 21-year-old Andrew Boldt of West Bend, Wis., in a classroom filled with Purdue electrical engineering students. Alaska Serial Killer Dies at 75

Convicted Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen, who hunted down women in the Alaska wilderness in the 1970s as Anchorage boomed with construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, died Thursday. He was 75. Alaska Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sherrie Daigle said Hansen died at Alaska Regional Hospital after being in declining health for the past year. Hansen was convicted in 1984 after confessing to killing 17 women, mostly dancers and prostitutes, during a 12-year span. He was convicted of four of the murders in a deal that spared him having to go to trial 17 times. Read more...

Teen Found, Boyfriend Arrested

An arrest has been made in the case of a Florida teen who vanished Aug. 15 and was found safe Wednesday. Volunteers and officials had been searching for 14-year-old Shaina McBride, who vanished Friday morning from the boat where she lived in Fort Lauderdale with her father, apparently leaving most of her personal belongings - including her shoes - behind. Detectives have since learned that Shaina was a voluntary runaway, reports the station. Read more...

Houston Cop Busted With Kilo of Cocaine

A Houston Police officer is off the job after authorities say she was caught with a kilo of cocaine. Federal agents and deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office allege that Jasmine Renee Bonner brought her 6-year-old son along for the drug deal. According to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, Bonner transported the 1,000 grams of cocaine to an Academy parking lot in the 25000 block of the North Freeway. Her boyfriend, Derryck Collins, allegedly removed the cocaine from the 26-year-old's trunk and then placed it in his car. Read more...

A Florida woman accused of killing her 80-year-old mother-in-law in New York tried to get rid of two prosecution witnesses by suggesting a murderous plot to a fellow jail inmate, a district attorney said. A prosecutor will seek the death penalty against a 25-year-old Indiana man accused of fatally shooting a police officer. Major Davis Jr. is charged with murder in the death of Officer Perry Renn on July 5 in Indianapolis, according to the station. A Providence, R.I. man is accused of killing a 26-year-old man and biting off the finger of the victim's mother during a struggle, before shooting her as well. The suspect, Dari Max Garcia, 24, also suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound during the encounter, according to WPRI. Victim Richard Catalano died at the scene. Man Arrested for Revenge Porn

Chad Monroe, a Michigan man, will appear in court on Aug. 26, for allegedly posting to Facebook nude photos of his ex-girlfriend and vowing to torment her until she committed suicide. Monroe, 34, harassed his ex-girlfriend with calls, texts and lewd Facebook messages, even after the woman filed for a protective order on July 22, according to police. Police arrested a suspect in the death of a 78-year-old woman who was found dead in her home on Aug. 8. Fort Wayne, Ind. police charged Zachary Reinders, 23, with murder, felony murder and robbery in connection with the death of Diane Woods. Rapper Gucci Mane Gets Three Years

Rapper Gucci Mane was sentenced to serve three years and three months in prison after pleading guilty to a federal firearms charge several months ago. The 34-year-old, whose real name is Radric Davis, pleaded guilty in May to a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after reaching an agreement with prosecutors. Woman's Disappearance 'Suspicious'

Police say a 36-year-old Idaho woman is missing under suspicious circumstances, and police have reportedly taken her boyfriend into custody on a parole violation after questioning him. Selena Dawn Thomas, of Nampa, outside Boise, was last seen Thursday, Aug. 14. Thomas wasn't reported missing until Monday. Police said there were "suspicious circumstances" at her home. Prosecutors say a Canadian drug kingpin who was one of New York's biggest marijuana suppliers and was dubbed the Pot Playboy has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for leading a $1 billion international drug trafficking enterprise. Jimmy Cournoyer pleaded guilty in May 2013 to charges including money laundering and conspiracies to manufacture and distribute marijuana and cocaine. Read more...

Donovan James Webster, 55, of Charlottesville could face additional charges after an investigation into the crash in Afton, according to the Albemarle County Police Department. Authorities said the wreck killed Wayne Thomas White of Waynesboro, and it involved two vehicles and a tractor trailer. Michael Brown Had THC in System

Michael Brown was shot in the head and chest multiple times, according to Mary Case, the St. Louis County medical examiner. While Case declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation into Brown’s death, another person familiar with the county’s investigation told The Washington Post that Brown had between six and eight gunshot wounds and was shot from the front. The fiancee of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez is seeking to have perjury charges dismissed. Portage County authorities have filed a charge of first-degree homicide against a 55-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man already facing a first-degree intentional homicide charge in Wood County. Joseph B. Reinwand, who currently is in prison on unrelated burglary charges, was charged in Portage County Circuit Court in the May 13, 1984, shooting death of his wife. A Troy woman is facing charges after trying to scam people for money by falsely claiming she and her son had cancer. 25-year-old Melissa D. Two missing Amish girls have turned up safe about 24 hours after they were apparently abducted from their family's roadside farm stand, authorities in northern New York State are saying. Reform School Body Identified

A boy buried in an unmarked grave at a reform school with a history of unsanitary and decrepit conditions was the first of 55 sets of remains found there to be positively identified, researchers said. Researchers from the University of South Florida said they used DNA and other tests to identify the remains of George Owen Smith, who was 14 when he disappeared in 1940 from the now-closed school. Man Admits Killing In-Laws With Bomb

A Tennessee man pleaded guilty to killing his wife's parents with a bomb disguised as a lamp to get out of repaying the couple a $40,000 debt. Richard Parker entered the plea in Wilson County Criminal Court in a deal that calls for him to serve life in prison without parole. The deal allows Parker, who is either 49 or 50, to avoid the death penalty, which prosecutors had filed to seek in the event the case went to trial. Read more...

Drunk Teacher Arrested at School

An Oklahoma City teacher started the school year with an arrest. The Lori Ann Hill was jailed after allegedly showing up to school drunk and without her pants. School officials called police about 9 a.m. after they said Hill appeared disoriented and without pants. When police arrived, the 49-year-old was in a classroom alone. Read more...

Body of Jennifer Hutson Found

The body and vehicle of missing Dundee, Oregon mom Jennifer Huston was found early Tuesday on private property in a wooded, rural area about 25 miles southwest of where she was last seen on July 24. Huston's body was found about 50 feet from her parked SUV. Read more...

Inmate Executed for Killing Neighbor

A Missouri inmate was put to death for raping and killing a college student in 1995, making him the first U.S. prisoner put to death since an Arizona lethal injection went awry last month. The Missouri Department of Corrections said Michael Worthington was executed by lethal injection at the state prison and was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. He is the seventh Missouri inmate executed this year. Worthington had been sentenced to death for the attack on 24-year-old Melinda "Mindy" Griffin during a burglary of her Lake St. Louis condominium. Read more...

Cop Charged in 'Suitcase Murders'

A former police officer accused of hiding the corpses of two women whose bodies were found in suitcases in rural Wisconsin is newly charged with killing one of the victims. According to a criminal complaint, ex-West Allis Police Officer Steven Zelich admitted to choking 19-year-old Jenny Gamez during a sex game. The complaint alleges Zelich killed the college student from Oregon during a choking game that went too far, hid her body in a suitcase she brought to their sex date and then kept her body in his refrigerator for months. Murder Victims Killed for Cash

The 2013 slayings of two men in Joliet, Ill., were carried out as part of a plot to steal money, alcohol and cigarettes, a prosecutor told jurors in the trial of one of the suspects. In her opening statement for the trial of the first of four suspects in the case, Will County Assistant State's Attorney Tricia McKenna said that while the killers believed one of the victims was known to carry large amounts of cash, when the two were strangled and the killers checked their pockets, they found just $120. News Anchor Charged With Shoplifting

A California news anchor who works for a FOX affiliate is facing grand theft, burglary and conspiracy charges. Sabrina Rodriguez was arrested and is on voluntary leave from her job with FOX 40 in Sacramento. Prosecutors said Rodriguez drove her fiancé, Nicholas Gray, to San Francisco to help sell stolen goods in January 2013. In the months that followed, the couple allegedly texted one another messages implying theft. Read more...

Man Sentenced for Girlfriend's Murder

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for killing his girlfriend in her western New York college dorm room two years ago. Clayton Whittemore wept while being sentenced to the maximum prison term in Rochester. Whittemore was convicted of second-degree murder in May for fatally beating 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut in her room at the State University of New York College at Brockport. A Colorado man reportedly shot and killed his 14-year-old son before fatally turning the gun on himself following a seven-hour standoff with deputies. Trial Set for Bethany McKee

Trial will begin next week for 20-year-old Bethany McKee, one of four suspects accused of the murder and robbery of Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins, who were killed in Joliet, Illinois last year. McKee was arrested along with Joshua Miner, 26, Adam Landerman, 21, and Alisa Massaro, 22, for the murders of the two black men, which took place at Massaro's home. Read more...

Student Arrested in Triple Murder

An Arkansas man has been arrested for allegedly shooting four people - killing three - in a possibly drug-related incident at a home in Texas. Twenty-one-year-old Justin Pharez Smith, of Pine Bluff, Ark., was taken into custody at a residence in Grand Prairie by members of the North Texas U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, according to the station. He is the suspect in Saturday's triple murder of 38-year-old Demarcus Black, 36-year-old Kimberly Montgomery and 21-year-old Tyteanna Lyahanee Brown in Oak Cliff, a suburb of Dallas. Read more...

Bullied Girl's Mom Sues

The mother of a 13-year-old Florida girl who authorities say jumped to her death because she was bullied is suing the Polk County School Board, alleging the school board didn't do enough to protect her daughter. The suit, filed in Polk County, also names a construction materials company and a teenager accused of stalking her daughter. Rebecca Sedwick was 12 when she leaped to her death at an abandoned concrete plant in September 2013. Read more...

P.J. Tucker Gets DUI Jail Time

Suns forward P.J. Tucker will serve three days in jail and 11 days of home detention as part of the punishment for his guilty plea to a May charge of super extreme DUI in Scottsdale. Tucker plead guilty to a May 10 charge of super extreme DUI, which is given for a blood alcohol content of .20 or greater. Tucker was stopped for a traffic violation but arrested for DUI and his blood test showed a blood alcohol content of .222. Read more...

Search Widens for Jennifer Huston

The search for a missing 38-year-old Oregon mother has expanded to the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington state and some 300 miles from where she was last seen. Jennifer Huston, of Dundee, Ore., was captured on security footage July 24 at a gas station in nearby Newberg after leaving her home to run errands. Huston, a stay-at-home mom with two small children, has not been seen or heard from since. Read more...

Body of 8-Year-Old Found in Home

The body of an 8-year-old boy was found inside his home several days after he died, and his father is facing criminal charges, Pennsylvania authorities said. According to police, the boy's father was aware of his son's death and when the odor of decomposition became too strong, he informed his wife. The wife then called the police. Court records show 38-year-old Jarrod Nicholas Tutko was charged Saturday with child endangerment, concealing the death of a child and abuse of a corpse. Read more...

Husband, Son Found Dead in Arkansas

An Arkansas woman considered a "possible suspect" in the death of her husband and 10-month-old son bonded out of jail. Twenty one-year-old Brooke Sueann Floyd was arrested Sunday, two days after being found wandering alone on a remote road in Yell County. The Greenwood, Ark., woman had previouly been traveling in a truck with her husband and infant son, but she was alone when police found her. The wife and mother was charged with felony endangering the welfare of a minor and hindering apprehension or prosecution. Read more...

Tied-Up Wife Accused of Murder

A Houston-area woman has been charged in the 2012 slaying of her husband in a death originally reported as an attack on the couple at their home. The Harris County Sheriff's Office says Sandra Melgar faces a murder charge in the fatal stabbing of Jaime Melgar. Relatives arrived at the home on Dec. 23, 2012, to help the Melgars celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary. Family members reported finding the husband tied up and stabbed to death in one closet and the wife bound and alive in another. Read more...

Deputies in Orange County say a female decomposed body was found near the search site for a missing teenage girl. Authorities were searching for 16-year-old Alexandria Chery on Friday morning, according to the station, when deputies said landscapers in Osceola County called police around 9:30 a.m. to report finding a body in a wooded area near Interstate 4. Fugitive Killer's Remains Found

Officials say their search for a man suspected of killing his wife and two young daughters last year has ended with the discovery of skeletal remains on a Northern California riverbank. Shasta County sheriff's Detective Dave Eoff said dental records confirmed that the remains belonged to Shane Miller, who had been wanted for questioning since his wife, Sandy, and the couple's 8-year-old and 5-year-old daughters, were shot to death in their home in the rural community of Shingletown in May 2013. Drunk Drives Into River, Kills Friend

The Leon County Sheriff's Office Sunday arrested a man after detectives determined he drove a car into the Ochlocknee River near Tower Road while drunk, which resulted in the drowning death of his friend, who was a passenger in the car. Jeffrey Rushing, 20, was arrested by LCSO deputies after he went to the Sheriff's office and told deputies he was driving a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo while drunk after spending time with his friends at a residence on Golden Park Lane, reports LCSO. The teenage daughter of a flight attendant whose body was found in the trunk of her car has been charged with murder. Alyssa Barrett, 17, is charged with murder and robbery in the death of DeCarol Deloney-Cain, 54, according to the station. The District Court of Appeal of the State of Florida, Fourth District, has ordered a new trial for Dalia Dippolito three years after she was found guilty in a murder-for-hire plot against her husband. According to the July 2014 ruling, Dippolito argued that the trial court "erred by denying her request to individually question prospective jurors about their exposure to pretrial publicity about her case." A former Virginia Tech student has been indicted on a charge of first-degree murder for allegedly killing a senior at the college in February. Jessica Michelle Ewing, 23, was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on July 22 on first- and second-degree murder charges as well as a charge of transporting, secreting, concealing or altering a dead body. Nick Fairley Sentenced for DUI

Mobile native, former Auburn standout and current Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was sentenced Thursday, July 31, on a DUI charge and reckless driving. It stemmed from a 2012 incident. Fairley was sentenced to six months – suspended – with one year probation. He also has to pay $750 in court fees and fines and take two statutory classes: one for the DUI charge and the other for the reckless driving charge. Read more...
